Why dogs sometimes eat faeces@f0

The act of eating faeces called coprophagia. This can be  eating their own, other dogs or of other animals.
It is a common complaint of owners to their vets. Coprophagia may result due to various medical problems. Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (abnormal function of the pancreas), Pancreatitis, Intestinal infections, Malabsorption or Maldigestion syndromes, dietary deficiency or high fat diet.

With the majority of these conditions coprophagia is only one of the clinical signs noted and other abnormalities are commonly encountered.

A variety of behavioural theories explain coprophagia. Attention-seeking behaviour is the most common. Some dogs may mimic their owner behaviour when owner clean after their dogs in their presence and therefore pick faeces themselves. Dogs may also learn this behaviour from other dogs.

Make sure your dog has a good quality diet such as hills, eukanuba, or James Well Beloved. Other diets may be as good but take your time to investigate. A simple guide is to look at the faeces. If the there is a large volume it may mean that it’s digestability is not as it should. If it is soft or one can not pick it up clean, than this is also may be a sign of not a great quality food.

Remember this rule apply only if there is no specific medical condition. By the way when checking prices one may look at time intervals rather than cost per bag of food. The reason for this is that some diets may have better digestability and therefore one need to feed less, and the same bag will last longer.  If diet change together with behavioral modification is not resolving the condition, one should consult a vet.

Thank you for this overview. I did not know that this condition could be medical and defintly I did not realise that the behavioural related issue are so complicated. Is there any treatment that may help while the behavioural problemms are worked on?

    Hi,
As you have suggested, the specific problem should be identified and dealt with. at the same time, particularly if this is a behavioral problem than medications like Deter could be used. this is thought to make the dog’s faeces unpalatable. naturally this would work on dogs that eat there own faeces.
